Episode Summary

Can boundaries actually help us build better relationships?

For many of us, boundaries can feel selfish, unloving, or even unbiblical. But what if healthy boundaries aren’t about keeping people out? What if they actually help us love others more wisely?

In this episode, Kim, Brenda, and Cindy have an honest conversation about what they’ve learned from setting boundaries in their own lives. They explore the difference between healthy boundaries and walls, why access and trust go hand in hand, how forgiveness differs from enabling unhealthy behavior, and why our own emotional and spiritual health matters in the way we love others.

Most importantly, they look to Scripture and the example of Jesus to discover how boundaries can help us love people well without losing sight of the One who teaches us how to love in the first place.

Key Take Away

God didn’t create boundaries to keep good things apart. He created them to help healthy relationships flourish. Healthy boundaries can do the same in our relationships. They aren’t about loving people less. They’re about loving people wisely, in ways that reflect the heart of God.

Reflection Question

What simple boundary do you need to set this week, for yourself or for someone else?

Before taking action, spend some time with God. Ask Him to show you where a healthy boundary might help you love Him, yourself, or someone else more wisely. And before setting a boundary, take some time to understand what healthy, biblical boundaries actually look like.

Genesis 2–3

John 15:1–4 – “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

Hebrews 4:12 – God’s Word is alive and powerful.

Matthew 14:23 –  After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,

Mark 1:35 – Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

1 Corinthians 10:31 – So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Matthew 12:46–50 – While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

1 Corinthians 13

Matthew 19:26 – Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Genesis 1:9–10 – And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.”And God saw that it was good.

Job 38

Revelation 21:4 – ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Proverbs 4:23  – “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Ephesians 6:10–18

Luke 5:15–16 – Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

Galatians 6:2–5 – Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.
